SOUTHERN ALBERTA TOUR

If you couldn’t make it to Edmonton for the premiere run of our latest and greatest multimedia action-comedy-adventure, then you have been blessed by the oracles: we are bringing the fantasy straight to your door!

But wait… there’s more!

Not only are we bringing the show to you, but those who catch the Son of a Dwarf in Southern Alberta will be viewing the never-before-seen Directors Cut version!

That’s right, over 5 minutes of additional material rated too hot for Edmonton audiences (as in, the actors were getting too hot from being on the stage for that long). But we’ve re-added missing scenes and are presenting the full length, Uncut fantasy experience for your viewing pleasure! Even if you saw the show during it’s premiere run at the Edmonton Fringe Festival, come see it again! There is something new for you to experience!

Miss. Sable of Sound+Noise doesn’t grade on a “star” system… but I personally rate this review as a 4.5/5!

“Although it is not on the main Fringe grounds, taking in “Son of a Dwarf” at the Garneau Theatre offers something other shows at the Fringe do not possess: Cinema + Theatre. Under the direction of Kimberlee Stadelmann and Brent Felzien, the show highlights local Edmonton talent starring Murray Cullen, Willie Banfield, Cliff Kelly and Cari Russell.

The story structure is epicly formulaic in its own right and embraces hallmarks of the fantasy franchise. Saavy viewers will appreciate the fantasy and pop-culture references interspersed throughout the performance. The story begins when a half-elf child is cast out into the wilderness to be executed because his father realizes his wife had been cheating on him with the elf milk man. However, the executioner is thwarted by a passing Dwarf who later raises the child as his own. Meanwhile, the kingdom is ruled by the evil Raxbar and his evil Sentator Palpatine-like advisor, Zinephor. Thus, as the child matures, he realizes he is not the biological son of Titan, the Dwarf and he wishes to discover his true identity. Thus, begins a quest where he meets his mountain-man friend, Himli, and the nimble oracle archer, Sorenta. Together they acquire talismans that will assist them on their journey while meeting an array of magical creatures along the way.

The most stunning part of this production in the seamless and innovative integration of the cinematic scenes projected on screens behind the stage. Oftentimes, a shot serves as the background for the on-stage action; however, there are moments where cinematic characters interact with the on-stage actors. It creates a diverse universe within the physical constraints of a standard stage, expanding the visual realm for the audience. Even the sound recordings matched the projected images to aid in sound localization of locations or characters. Some of the best parts were seeing the camera shots panning over the Alberta wilderness. Audience members could watch the characters trek across the rugged landscape as if it were in real-time. Plus, there was a training montage scene included in the story. No story of self-discovery and impending battle could be complete without a training montage! This performance fuses live theatre with cinema to create a unique visual showcase that should not be missed by Fringe audiences.”

Son of a dwarf, William the Useless, is the unexpected “chosen one” in this hilarious fantasy production. The comedy unfolds as a naïve and awkward William is forced to man-up and save the world with a goat, two miniature Gnomes and a beautiful oracle as his sidekicks. The story is packed with charming, albeit ghoulish characters, each one adding just the right touch to create a truly wonderful production. Stage acts are spliced with film at perfect intervals and allow for handy special effects and more detailed scenes. All the elements work effortlessly to deliver a most memorable production.

Ok ok… we are a little behind. Truth is, we have been very busy here at the co. So much so, that we have been neglecting to post the videos of our last few ticket draws. Despite this, we have in fact been making the draws every week and have had big winners.

Quite a few Stettler folks shunned Elton John (who was playing in Red Deer that same night) to be delighted by the rip-roaring comic adventure that we were pleased to put on for them. Special thanks to all the folks from Forestburg, Alberta who made the drive out including Brent’s mom, who just recently had knee surgery (though you wouldn’t know it by the way she kicked his ass).

Thank you all! Now we a switching gears, as our fundraiser comes to a close and our focus shifts completely to building our next show. The support has been overwhelming and we are going to make it all worth your while.

Stay tuned!

And of course, things continue to plug along behind the scenes. We are frighteningly close to a rehearsal draft of our script (thanks to Jer Mason who has been serving as writer on this one as well as Amos Altman who has lent us his formidable skills as a dramaturd.) As well, we are building some pretty insane props and costumes, some of which we will share with you in our always educational production diaries as we work towards our premiere.

But all this new-found awesomeness is not possible without your support. Thank you, those who have donated already. And those not yet… what’s the hold up? We only have a precious few more weeks left! Every penny helps! And the fabulous prizes don’t hurt either!

Lots happening here at Accidental Humour Co!

First and foremost, we are hard at work at our next big Multimedia Theatre One Act, returning once again with our signature blend of amazing action, pulse-pounding adventure, gut-busting comedy and incredible special effects! This time around, we are leaping into the world of high fantasy adventure. Sword and sorcery await you as Accidental Humour once again turns the genre on its head to deliver guaranteed entertainment!

Which brings us to our next order of business… We’re broke.

Well, not REALLY, but we need help to bring this fantasy adventure to the stage. Running a theatre company that is innovative with multimedia takes a lot of resources, including equipment, props, costumes, software and raw manpower. We’ve been doing some great stuff, but we are always striving to top ourselves. Every show we aim to improve and make something even bigger and better then what came before and we’ve come to the point where we need to either grow… or die.

That’s where you come in.

We are fundraising right now to build the funds we need to help us reach the next step in the growth of our company. We have a target in mind that will help us with some much-needed upgrades. We encourage you to visit our IndieGoGo page and donate today! Not only will it help us make great theatre, but you will also get FABULOUS PRIZES! Visit the page for more glorious details!
